Overview

HOLZERNTE provides computer-aided decision support for the timber harvesting and marketing sectors by allowing the user to perform both preliminary and final costing analysis of harvesting operations. While the derivation of stumpage value figures is central to the programme, further information such as time expenditure, labour costs and material costs can also be calculated. The programme permits the inclusion of all the usual processing and delivery considerations, and allows the user to examine the influence of a range of factors on the stumpage value by comparing the results of various simulations. Factors such as assortment and harvest selection, quality classification, timber price, operational costs, salary rates, harvesting methods and workflow steps can all be modified to investigate the effects on stumpage value. Even if a forestry enterprise is limited to certain harvesting methods due to a lack of alternatives, increasing operational costs mean that enterprises nevertheless require computer-aided decision-making to calculate profitability. This is particularly import when organising self-employed forest workers.

Abrupt changes in the timber market and a growing tendency towards buyer-oriented timber grading present rapidly changing demands on the timber producer, in terms of time and location. HOLZERNTE provides a flexible and practically-orientated grading of timber products, and is thereby an important instrument for modern timber marketing. The programme allows the user to plan the most profitable harvesting solution by adapting predefined harvests to correspond with buyer demands for various assortment options, price ideas or log lengths.

Further areas of application include:

The programme is compatible with a selection of widely available one and two handed electronic callipers (including MASSER CALIPER, DATAFOX, MANTAX) in order to rationalise data collection.

User Circle

HOLZERNTE has been in use since 1997 and is currently installed in all State Forestry Departments across Germany. Due to the wide spectrum of potential applications, the circle of users includes not only forestry enterprises and administrations, but also forestry service companies, contractors, timber processors and forest valuation firms. Aside from commercial users, the software is also used in forestry training centres, technical colleges and universities. HOLZERNTE is currently the most widely distributed forestry software package in Germany, with approximately 1300 applications of the previous version 6.0 installed across the country.

Programme History

The HOLZERNTE programme was developed by the Department of Biometry and Informatics at the Forestry Research Institute Baden-Württemberg in the early 1990's, with financial assistance from the Tarifgemeinschaft deutscher Länder (TdL). The software package is the result of close cooperative work between the Forestry Research Institute and partners in Baden-Württemberg and other German states within the framework of the "Timber Harvest Tariff" working group, which was founded by the Board for Forest Operations and Technology (Kuratoriums für Waldarbeit und Forsttechnik - KWF).
The programme was customised to the practical requirements of the Baden-Württemberg State Forest Administration with assistance from the Department of Budget and Financial Controlling at the Freiburg Forest Administration, and has been improved and expanded as a result of contributions and suggestions proposed by users in other German states.
