The ice birches
These
birches are grafts of the native silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.).
Selected individuals with excellent straight stems, which had withstood repeated
ice-break events without damage, were cloned. They shall yield valuable veneer
timber when they are harvested at around 80-100 years of age and can be seen as
an alternative to imported tropical timber (see map 18).
