The Coast Redwoods
The coast redwood also comes
from California where its timber is highly valued. The tree grows in a narrow
strip on the pacific coast and can reach a height of 100 m. In Germany the tree,
which is related to the Redwood, never proves to be particularly hardy. In hard
winters the crowns of even older trees die back at least partially. The three
examples in Liliental were planted in 1961 and are cuttings of trees from middle
European botanical gardens which have survived for many decades (see map 14).
