The Tuliptree

The native land of the tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera L.) lies in the east of the USA between the Mississippi and the Atlantic coast. There the tree grows singularly or in small groups in various broadleaf societies and can reach a height of 40 to 60 m. The tulip tree is revered as a park tree due to its tulip shaped flowers (May to June) and the autumnal yellow of its large leaves. The timber has many uses as veneer, interior finishing and in the manufacture of musical instruments due to its light weight and good consistency. The planting out of the stand in Liliental took place in 1960 and was supplemented two years later. Unfortunately the summer lightning storms and snow damage in winter have increasingly led to crown deformation (see map 15).
