Forest protection
The Forest Protection department focuses on the diagnosis, prevention and environmentally friendly treatment of forest diseases triggered by biotic and abiotic damaging factors. Knowledge of forest diseases and their reliable identification are not only essential for understanding how damage to trees and timber arises, but also for explaining many other processes in the forest (Forest zoological and pathological research). The Forest Protection department thus focuses on living (biotic) causes of damage, especially insects and fungi, but also on the consequences of abiotic causes of damage, such as storms, drought and other chemical or physical factors. The department’s research aims to predict diseases and the courses they will take as accurately as possible (Pest monitoring and prognosis), in order to be able to give sound recommendations for their prevention or for environmentally friendly measures to avert them and to prevent damage (Forest health advisory service).
