Biological diversity
Biodiversity is the basis for the function, stability and adaptability of ecosystems. Its protection is an essential prerequisite for sustainable forestry.
Specifically, both the genetic diversity of plant and animal species and the diversity of their forest habitats must be secured and further developed in consideration of environmental changes. In doing so, the multifunctionality of forest management must be ensured, whilst also taking account of the acceptance of the population. For this, the diversity of protected structures and functional biodiversity must be recorded and evaluated in addition to biodiversity.
The aim is to secure and if necessary improve the various forest functions and ecosystem services by strengthening biodiversity. To monitor the achievement of these objectives, methods must be developed for the ecologically meaningful and economically viable monitoring of biodiversity in the forest.
